Jazz WorkshopsTutors: Welcome to our summer jazz workshops; The prices are expected to be around £26 per afternoon - great value for 4 hours of tuition! You can attend any or all of the afternoons. Numbers are limited to 60 for each workshop, and they were very popular last summer, so be in quick! 'Each of the hand-picked tutors below will bring their unique style and expertise; Alice Hyde and Debra Skeen will engage you in vocal technique, Jilly Jarman brings you an insight into world music and improvisation, Philip Milburn's vocal meditations will both relax and stimulate you and your voice, while I shall be looking more closely at four different styles of jazz.' - Jill Jarman. If you are a current choir member, sign up at rehearsals, otherwise email us at info@addison-singers.org.uk. Jill Jarman - Workshop Facilitator. For each of the workshops I shall explore the sounds, rhythms, and harmonies of four distinct yet connected jazz styles: Blues, swing, cool, and contemporary jazz. We will use chants, movement, clapping, call and response, and improvisation to discover what made the blues the foundation of the music we call 'jazz'. The second workshop investigates swing; how it started, what makes something 'swing', and its transition into be-bop. We will imitate the sections of a big band to understand more fully how it all works. The cool jazz workshop makes connections to minimalism. We will build on the first two workshops to improvise some 'cool licks', forming an understanding of how this differs in its performance from other jazz styles. Graphic scores come into play in the final workshop and we will get the opportunity to create our own, from which everyone will sing from at the end of the day. Above all, these workshops give the opportunity to sing, move, shout and just enjoy the pure exhilaration of being a part of an exciting performance and music genre. Alice Hyde - Vocal Technique. From Texas, USA where she mastered in Music, Alice has had a varied singing career which has included entertaining in Sheraton Hotels, film music from 'Lord of the Rings' to the recent 'Harry Potter' movies, performing in musicals and singing in oratorio and opera roles throughout the world. A regular for the Addison Singers, Alice teaches at a school for performing arts, ranging from pop, musical theatre, jazz to opera as well as coaching privately. Philip Milburn - Sound & Voice Meditation. A session which explores the voice as a tool for self-expression, relaxation, meditation and well-being, using toning, chanting, singing, sounding, rhythm, movement, creative vocal expression and improvisation. Singing and voicework are naturally healing, as they enable the expression of feelings, the release of stress and mental clutter. This session will work on many levels - physical, emotional, mental, energetic and spiritual; it's a vocal workout for mind, body and spirit - cleansing, healing, energising, affirming and uplifting. You'll leave feeling relaxed, peaceful and uplifted, with your energy transformed.
